As designers we built the platform and the brand for Lumen Learning, designed to carry their goals and values in a focused visual language, with content in eleven languages. The result is an approachable, genuinely accessible interfacethat works for younger learners on old hardware. As a team that takes accessibility seriously, getting this right mattered to us.
Design system
A platform built for eleven languages from day one
The architecture for the whole platform was shaped by localisation, accessibility and low-bandwidth performance as first-class constraints rather than afterthoughts. The visual system follows the same rules throughout.
Performance is an accessibility feature
Designed for the slowest device in the room
The interface was tuned hard for slow connections, because the learners who need this platform most are on the worst devices. Strict performance budgets, server rendering and offline-capable lessons mean the experience holds up on a five-year-old phone over a 3G connection.
Accessibility, verified rather than claimed
WCAG 2.2 AA, tested with real assistive technology
The site applies the accessibility standard throughout, so the platform works regardless of a learner's device, connection or language. Automated checks in CI plus regular screen-reader testing keep the standard from slipping as the team ships new lessons.

The interface and the whole component library was built to handle text expansion, right-to-left layouts and script variation without breaking .
